INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

 

AGENCY OVERVIEW

The U.S. Probation Office is responsible for conducting presentence investigations on offenders convicted of federal offenses and supervising offenders in the community conditionally released to probation, parole, and supervised release. In the pre-sentence investigation mission, U.S. Probation Officers assist the Court and serve the community by conducting investigations and preparing independent, accurate, and comprehensive investigative reports. In the supervision mission, U.S. Probation Officers protect the community by ensuring that offenders on supervision comply with court-imposed conditions and sanctions.

 

The U.S. Probation Office in the District of New Jersey has main offices located in Newark, Trenton, and Camden and satellite offices located in Paterson, Tinton Falls, and Northfield.

 

 

GOALS OF INTERNSHIP OUR PROGRAM

The primary goal of the internship program is to provide students interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice, corrections, or other related field the opportunity to work in a federal agency where officers develop and utilize the investigative skills of law enforcement and the treatment and service-related skills of social workers all in furtherance of executing the missions of the agency. Students will be exposed to all areas of the profession including office and fieldwork, court appearances, and interactions with a diverse variety of agencies.

 

 

REQUIREMENTS

The U.S. Probation Office is currently seeking students majoring in criminal justice, corrections, or other related disciplines to participate in a non-salaried internship program. Generally, the internship will begin in the first full week of classes of the semester and last for 15 weeks. The intern will be expected to work at least 10 hours per week on weekday(s) to be determined. These requirements may be modified to concur with the policies or procedures of a particular college or university.

 

  • The student must have the equivalent of at least junior status in an accredited undergraduate program and a grade point average of no less than 3.0.

  • Prospective applicants must be United States Citizens of at least 20 years of age and registered with the Selective Service, as well as possess a valid driver’s license.

  • The student should be proficient with computers, possess strong writing and typing skills, and have the ability to work under deadlines.

  • All interested applicants should submit a resume and cover letter to the representative listed below. If selected, an interview will be conducted and will include questions concerning the student’s interest in the profession and reasons for applying for the position, as well as inquiries into his or her background.

  • The interview will be similar to that which is conducted for a full-time paid position. A writing sample may also be requested.

  • Prior to appointment, the student shall undergo a background investigation, criminal history inquiries, credit check, and at least one drug screen. The applicant will also be fingerprinted.
